MARCH – APRIL – MAY

SPRING GARDENING

  • Apply pre-emergent herbicide now to your landscape beds. (Carefully read manufacturer’s directions for use.)
  • Prune Azaleas only after they have bloomed.
  • Plant Summer flowers now.
  • Celebrate Arbor Day by planting a new tree.

SPRING GARDENING TIPS

  • Azaleas are susceptible to spider-mites and lacebugs. Volck oil is the safest insecticide to use against them.
  • Do your Crepe Myrtles suffer from insects and fungus? Mix four parts Orthene (75% wettable powder) with one part water. Apply the resulting paste in a ring around the trunks of your Crepe Myrtles, four feet above the ground. Paint the rings twice the diameter of the trunks, once or twice a year as needed.

FUTURE GARDENING PLANS

  • New landscape projects should be planned and implemented now.
  • If you’ve become tired of dragging hoses around all Summer, consider installing an underground irrigation system now. Automated irrigation systems reduce your maintenance effort, keep lawns and plants healthy, and utilize your water more efficiently than hand-watering.
  • Properly planned and designed lighting can increase the usefulness and safety of your outdoor areas, and highlight the design features of your landscape.
