Southeastern Louisiana University Hurricane

Memorial Fountain

Shortly after the passage of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Dufreche-Perkins & Associates were approached to plan a commemorative design which would complement the University's Master Plan.

The SLU Hurricane Memorial fountain was constructed as a contemporary reflecting pool. Consisting of a raised stone monolith, the fountain overflows a central basin to fall to a narrow pool below. The coastline of the Southeastern U.S. was depicted in stone, profiled with black granite slabs which seem to float slightly above the waters of the Gulf which spill over the fountains sides.

To depict the sudden danger of the two storms, the water smoothly circulating in the raised "Gulf" basin periodically changes its placid overflow down the fountain's stone sides. The Gulf-waters rise and flood across the landscape, twin fountains erupt from the storms' landfall locations.
