US-51 Business Pedestrian Project

The City of Hammond selected Dufreche-Perkins and Associates to provide Design, Construction Documentation, and Construction Administration for a pedestrian linkage from their historic downtown area to their modern shopping district and Mall (approximately a mile distant).

The use of Transportation Enhancement Grant (TEA-21) funding, and the proximity of the sidewalk to a state highway, required that the design (and all the extensive documentation) follow rigorous guidelines. Decorative masonry areas with shade-trees and seating were provided at regular intervals to provide visual interest to the project, while adding functional amenities for the end users. Simple landscaping was provided at key areas to provide buffers and visual appeal, and small pedestrian plazas were provided at major intersections.

This project provided a necessary link between previously separated parts of town, and sees regular use.
